  Description

  Lachlan

I’m ready for a baby, but haven’t found the right alpha. Most of them are alpha-holes, and I’m tired of waiting. I don’t expect to meet a great guy when I go in to discuss my options to get pregnant without a partner, but one of the doctors in the practice is hot and seems different from the alphas I’ve met in the past. I risk letting Donovan in and start thinking about a future, but then he ghosts me. He doesn’t return calls or messages, so I give up, figuring it’s over—until I find out I’m carrying his baby. He seems to want to be involved with our child, but how can I trust him again?

  Donovan

Lachlan is the perfect omega. I get close way too fast, at first ignoring my personal rule of doing no harm to my own heart. Watching my fathers’ marriage splinter has left me wary of involvement, and I don’t do long-term. When I realize I’m falling for Lachlan, I run until I find out I’m going to be a father. I only have a few months to convince Lachlan I can change, and figure out how to do that, while watching out for my omega and our unborn child.

“So, if you don’t have a partner or a willing participant of your own accord, you do have another option,” Katy, the reproductive endocrinologist, said with a smile on her face that seemed to dull her otherwise harsh features. “This is a process that usually goes much smoother when you have a partner to go through this with. But we have had multiple people go through this procedure successfully on their own. Not only that, but for the most part, they flourish. And of course, myself and the staff here will be here to help you with any questions or assistance you may need at every step of the way.” She reached across her desk and gave my wrist a comforting squeeze.

“What is the other option?” I asked, amazed by how comforting Katy was. I was ready for a child, in fact my life was nearly perfect. I had everything I could ask for. I had the job I always wanted, my own house, and a sense of accomplishment in my life. The only thing missing in my life was a child. I had thought Pat could have been the guy I settled down with and started a family with, but it turned out he was just another alpha-hole like all the others.

Katy, sitting down on a chair across from me behind her desk, rolled backwards to a filing cabinet and grabbed a stack of books from a drawer before rolling back to her desk and placing them down gently in front of her. “Well, since you don’t have a partner or willing participant of your own, we do offer a selection of sperm donors who have registered with us for this very thing. Is a sperm donor registered through our hospital something you’d be interested in maybe pursuing?”

I sat for a moment and rolled the idea over in my mind. A sperm donor was exactly what I was looking for, but I didn’t want to come off as too excited. I had given this a lot of thought and I didn’t want to come off as too eager in case Katy decided that I wasn’t really sure what I was getting myself into. “You know, I’ve given this a lot of thought. I would love to have become pregnant from a significant other. But I just got out of a relationship and I’m already 33. I’m not naive, I know my clock is ticking and time is running out for me. I’d ask someone in my life if they would be a sperm donor, but I can’t think of anyone close enough to me that I could ask to take on the responsibility and never mind all the complications that could come from that. At this point, I think a sperm donor through the hospital is the right choice for me.”

Katy nodded at my statement. “I can see you have put a lot of thought into this. I’m glad you said that, a lot of patients that come in here aren’t really sure what they want. They think they want a child, but they don’t know all the complications and issues that can come with it.”

“Well, rest assured I’ve gone through all my options over and over. This is what I want and I’m ready for all the responsibilities that come with parenthood,” I replied, glancing down at the stack of books she had placed on her desk. Her hand was resting on top of them still, but I could make out words on the cover. Updated Registry Donor Listings. My heart fluttered in my chest knowing that I was about to take the first steps into fatherhood.

Katy smiled, surely pleased that I had done my research before coming in today. “Well, that’s fantastic. If you’re sure this is what you want, you have my support and full attention. If you’re ready, shall we go ahead and move forward with your decision?”

“Please,” I said, confidently. I was ready for this and was eager to get the process started.

“Well, I know you’re probably excited to get started,” Katy said, noticing my eyes were still locked on the stack of books under her hands. “But first things first. I’m going to need you to start tracking your fertility time. This isn’t a cheap procedure, and accuracy of insemination is half the battle.”

I let out a laugh before averting my focus back to Katy. “Of course. Actually, I started a few days ago in anticipation of this meeting, so I’ll get the completed information back to you as soon as possible.”

She nodded and stood up from her chair, grabbing the stack of books in her arms. “Now, the fun part,” she said, giving me a wink. “Follow me and I’ll set you all up.”

I nearly jumped out of my seat with excitement. “After you,” I said, bowing down and swinging an arm out.

Katy let out a laugh and rolled her eyes. “Let’s go.” She gave me a pat on the shoulder and walked out of her office. I followed closely behind, trying my best not to knock into the entourage of people strolling down the crowded halls in white coats. Finally, nearing the end of the hallway, we reached a closed door. A plaque on the wall next to it denoted it as the designated room for Donor Research. She opened the door and took a step inside, holding it open for me so I could walk in behind her. “Have a seat.” She motioned to a large desk with a chair.
>
“So, this is where the magic happens?” I joked, taking a seat at the desk.

Rolling her eyes, Katy placed the stack of what I thought were books on the desk in front of me. Turned out, it was actually a set of three binders. “I hope you like reading, you’re in for a long day.”

I pulled the binders up to me and lined them up. I opened the first one and shuffled through a few of the pages. Each page had a picture of a different man with a little biography underneath the photo and some details typed out next to it including their name, age, and profession. Each binder must have had at least a couple hundred pages. There was no doubt in my mind that it would take at least a few hours to get through them.

Katy shuffled behind me and started sorting through a large cabinet while I skimmed through a few more of the pages. I didn’t pay much attention to her as I was absorbed by the contents of the binders. It wasn’t for a few more minutes that my attention snapped back to her when a loud thud sounded next to me.

She smiled as she tapped her hand on another pile of binders that she had just dropped on the table. “In case you get through those without a match.”

My eyes widened at the stack of binders in front of me and I could feel my jaw go slack. Well, maybe I was being optimistic about getting through all this in a few hours. “Looks like I have my work cut out for me,” I said, shutting my jaw with my hand and rubbing my chin between my thumb and index finger.

Katy smiled. “I’ll give you some space. Be sure to take your time and don’t feel like you need to get through all this today. This is a big decision and until you have your fertility time tracked we can’t progress any further anyway. So, take your time and be absolutely confident with your donor choice.”

  “Thanks Katy. For everything.”

She gave me a nod. “It’s what I’m here for.” Giving me a final smile, she headed back towards the hallway and left the room, closing the door behind her.

I took a deep breath and exhaled slowly, starting to already feel a little stressed at the task before me. I grabbed the binder closest to me and started flipping through the pages. To be honest, I wasn’t quite sure what I was looking for. Should I be more interested in the appearance of the photos of the men, or more invested in their biography? I finished the first binder in about an hour, but none of the men in it really jumped out to me. I could only pick one man and I wanted him to be the perfect one.

Shoving the binder I’d just finished browsing through to the side, I grabbed another one from the pile. I scanned through the second one even quicker than the first, but still none of the guys really appealed to me. I pushed it to the side with the other binder I had already been through.

The third binder proved no different than the two before it. I pushed it to the side and looked at the clock on the wall. Covering my mouth with the back of my hand I let out a yawn, realizing I had been here for nearly three hours. I glanced back towards the pile of binders I still had to go through. There were still about ten stacked I hadn’t yet touched. I had started to slouch in my chair and my eyelids had become heavy, but I decided to press on a little longer. I grabbed another binder from the pile but couldn’t manage to get through the first couple pages without drifting off into space. Realizing I was becoming discouraged, I decided to call it a day.

I piled the binders neatly together, making sure to keep the ones I had already been through and those I still needed to sort separated.

Making my way out of the room, I started heading back down the hallway towards the elevators. I pressed the call button and waited patiently as the elevator made its way up. A quiet chime sounded as it rose past each floor. My eyes started to drift closed as my fatigue started to catch up with me.

Reaching into my pocket, I grabbed my cell and started browsing through my notifications, trying to keep myself occupied. Finally, the elevator reached the floor and chimed a last time. As soon as the door opened, I took a step towards it, walking right into a man who was exiting it, causing me to drop my cell and him his clipboard.

“Sorry about that,” I apologized, reaching down and picking up my cell and his clipboard. I stood back up to pass it to him and froze. The man I literally just ran into was a doctor. Not only that, he was gorgeous.

“Oh, don’t worry about it. It was my fault, I wasn’t looking where I was going. Just been one of those days,” the man said with a large smile. “Name’s Donovan.” He extended a hand.

I extended my own and shook his hand. “Tell me about it, I’m about two coffees overdue.”

Donovan let out a laugh. “I’d offer to get you one, but I’m actually on my way to a meeting.” He leaned in closer to me and lowered his voice. “But between you and me, trust that you don’t want the coffee from here anyways.” He gave me a wink.

I could feel my stomach start to flutter, no doubt from the gorgeous man in front of me, and I could start to feel a light sweat break across my face. As charming as he was and as much as I wanted to get his number, I figured being a doctor, he was probably an alpha-hole anyways. And if I learned anything from past experiences, it was that that was exactly the last thing I needed in my life again. Still, I couldn’t look away from him and I found myself at a loss of words.

Luckily, the elevator door started to close, snapping my focus back to the situation. I jolted my hand forward and the doors opened back up. “Thanks for the tip,” I said, shuffling around Donovan and into the elevator.

He turned to face me as the door started to shut, a smile drawn across his face, and his deep brown eyes locked onto mine. “Oh, shit. Sorry about that,” I called out, realizing I still had his clipboard in my hand. I stopped the door from shutting for the second time and handed it over to him before taking a step back into the elevator.

“Thanks,” he said, taking a step back from the closing door but still keeping his eyes locked onto mine.

Finally, the doors shut completely, and a chime sounded indicating that it was descending. I let out a sign in relief. Charming, but still probably an alpha-hole, I reminded myself as I went back down to the ground floor.

When the elevator door shut, I turned back around and started continuing on my way to my first appointment. I entered the room and took a seat at a table large enough to fit at least fifteen people. I recognized a few of the people around me and exchanged pleasantries.

The details of the appointment were in regard to financial information, which didn’t concern me. Truth be told, I was little annoyed when I was first informed that I had to be in attendance. It was more a matter of formality, but now that I was here, I was glad I had a moment to reflect on my earlier encounter with the man from the elevator. I couldn’t pinpoint what exactly it was that drew me to him, but I couldn’t shake him from my mind. The meeting flew by and by the end of it, I didn’t think I could recollect anything that was really discussed.

I departed quickly and made my way down the hallway for my second meeting of the day. This one was of my own accord and with a patient for a scheduled ultrasound. I made my way into one of the screening rooms and was greeted by my patient. “How are you doing today?” I asked her with a smile.

“Doing? Well. Feeling? Round,” she joked, rubbing her hands over her large round belly.

I turned on the computer and took a seat on a chair next to her. She laid down on the reclining chair and looked up at the ceiling. “Well, look on the bright side. If your car ever breaks down, you could probably just roll to wherever you need to go.”

She let out a chuckle. “I’ll keep that in mind, Doc.”

“Mind raising your shirt a little for me?” I asked, as I rolled my chair over to the counter and grabbed the bottle of ultrasound gel. “This is going to be a little cool.” I put on a pair of gloves and spread a thin layer of the gel over her belly. The computer, now booted, made a few sounds as I picked up the ultrasound wand. “Ready?”

She gave me a nod and I tilted the monitor towards her, s
o she could see the image as it appeared. Bringing the wand toward her stomach, I made a small circle, making sure there were no air bubbles. Suddenly, the image of three tiny babies popped up on the screen.

  “How are they?” she asked.

I found my thoughts racing back to the guy from the elevator. He was absolutely stunning, but I wasn’t sure why I couldn’t get him out of my mind. Hell, he didn’t even offer me his name. Still, I wished I could have got to know him some more.

  “Doc?” the woman piped up.

“Hmm, oh sorry about that.” I glanced at the screen and pressed the print button on the keyboard. “Progressing fine and looking healthy. It shouldn’t be much longer now.”

“Thank god,” she replied behind a chuckle. I grabbed a cloth from the tray next to me and wiped the gel off her belly. She pulled her shirt back down and sat up on the chair. “Thanks, Doc.”

“Don’t worry about it, just doing my job,” I said cheerfully, giving her a smile as I made my way over to the printer and grabbed the ultrasound photo. “If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to call. Besides that though, you’re good to go. I’ll see you at our next scheduled appointment.” I passed her the photo.

“Sounds good.” She smiled down at the photo before gathering her stuff and heading out of the room.
